Tamil Nadu is among the most literate states of India. It has about 37 universities, nearly 455 engineering colleges, 566 arts and science institutes and 449 Polytechnic Colleges. The following article discusses about the well-known engineering colleges of Tamil Nadu and the courses offered by them.

Tamil Nadu and its Colleges

Tamil Nadu is the 7th most populated state. It has a high literacy rate and reserves 69% seats in educational institutes for the socially backward classes of society. The reservation by Tamil Nadu is the highest amongst all the other states. The state houses some of the finest engineering colleges of the country that impart quality education in almost all fields of science and technology.

Let us take a look at some of the engineering institutes of Tamil Nadu –

Indian Institute of Technology Madras – Indian Institute of Technology Madras or IIT Madras is an autonomous institute of national importance and is counted among the top engineering colleges of Tamil Nadu. It is located in Chennai and offers higher technological education, along with basic and applied research.

In 1959, the institute was officially inaugurated by former Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs, Prof. Humayun Kabir. Today, IIT Madras consists of around 8000 students, 550 faculty members and 1250 administrative plus supporting staff. It boasts a self-contained campus spanning across 250 hectares of land and is recognized as a premier institution for research, teaching, and industrial consultancy. There are 16 academic departments, 100 labs and selective advanced research centers in engineering specializations.

These departments include – Aerospace Engineering, Biotechnology, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Engineering Design, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Ocean Engineering, and Metallurgical and Materials Engineering.

IIT Madras teaches under-graduate, post-graduate and research degree programs in 15 fields of Engineering, Management, Humanities and Sciences. Admission to the B. Tech and B. Tech + M. Tech Dual Degree courses is done through the entrance test IIT-JEE. While, for the post-graduate degree programs like Master of Science and M. Tech admission can be sought through GATE or Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering.

Annamalai University – Annamalai University is among the largest public residential universities of Asia. Located in Annamalai Nagar in Chidambaram, the university spans across 1,500 acres of land and provides higher learning in engineering, science, humanities, arts and agriculture. The university offers distance education in Fashion Design, Interior Design, Textile Design, Retail Management, Hotel Management and Catering Technology, Twinning, a Commonwealth Youth Program, Health Science, Yoga, Fire, Music, and Pharmaceutics. There is also a B.Ed. Program, recognized by National Council for Teacher Education, taught through distance education.

The Faculty of Engineering and Technology was established in 1945 and consists of nine departments, namely Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Pharmacy, and Computer Science and Engineering.

The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has attributed the varsity with A++ grade. There are many scholarships and awards granted to deserving students. The eligible students are awarded 356 scholarships each year.

Annamalai University has many campuses outside Tamil Nadu. The institute established its first Study Center in Toronto in 2006. This Canadian division teaches courses in Dance, Music, Yoga and Tamil.
